Students of Geoff’s Online Permaculture Design Course have question-and-answer sessions where Geoff fields a number of questions every week and answers them via videos. This question was pulled from the 2021 collection. For more Q&A insights, check out the free Masterclass for an in-depth dive into all things permaculture www.discoverpermaculture.com

Question

Geoff mentions harmonics in video 2.4 more than once: “the flow and harmonics have been expressed” and “the more you go towards sea level the harmonics start to take more and more part”. Can you please elaborate and expand on what is meant by harmonics in this context?

Key Takeaways

If we are talking about rivers, we rarely have any waterfalls or rapids near the river mouth. They occur on the steep slopes where the water is crashing with lots of energy. These chaotic spaces are overrun with energy and hard to harness whereas, when the energy lessens, the river becoming smooth and winding, we have a harmonic pattern that’s easier to work with.

There are many forms of harmonics, and when energy has pushed beyond those chaotic patterns into smooth flows, we can work with them efficiently. These harmonic systems are the ones that help us get into sustainable production.
